The Sheffield Legal Fair

Government Legal Service (GLS)

The Government Legal Service (GLS) consists of around 2000 qualified lawyers working in 30 Government Departments and bodies. The work carried out by GLS Lawyers covers virtually every aspect of the law you would expect to meet in the private sector, but with the unique responsibilities of national and international importance. Working for the GLS ultimately appeals to lawyers who are interested in the interaction of law and politics and their effect upon the community as a whole.

Graduate Opportunities

The GLS offers around 25 training contracts and pupillages each year, all of which are based in London. Our next recruitment round, beginning in the summer of 2010 will be aimed at those who wish to start their training in September 2012. We are looking for strong academic and analytical ability, excellent communication and interpersonal skills and motivation for working in the public service.

Undergraduate Opportunities

We offer around 60 positions on our Summer Placement Scheme, which aims to provide students with an insight into the GLS' unique perspective of the law. Placements are targeted at penultimate year law students and final year non-law students who are interested in applying to the GLS for legal training. They are usually for a period of 2-3 weeks and students can expect to spend the duration of a placement in one department.
